An independent professional development platform for art museums, galleries, film festivals, foundations and other cultural organisations worldwide, focused on mission, strategy and practice.
The Fourth Wall is an independent online platform launching in 2027, offering practical, sector-informed professional development for cultural organisations worldwide. Its webinar programmes examine the shared challenges and opportunities organisations face across mission, strategy and practice, with an emphasis on knowledge exchange and applied learning. Each brings senior institutional leaders and specialists into conversation with professionals from organisations across the sector. They combine several formats, from keynotes, panel discussions and case studies to interactive breakout sessions, where participants have the opportunity to bring their own knowledge, experience, questions and perspectives to the discussion. The platform opens with its inaugural webinar programme: an in-depth, multi-session live event on a theme to be announced.
Private customised training for individual organisations will be available on request, and specialist-led peer learning cohorts that bring together professionals from different organisations will be open by application. In the longer term, we aim to extend our programmes to in-person events at partner venues.
Cultural organisations often collaborate widely with one another, yet much of the expertise and experience they accumulate remains siloed within their own four walls. The platform takes its name from breaking the fourth wall, a term from theatre, also used in film, for crossing the invisible boundary between a work and its audience. Institutions are bounded spaces, both literally and figuratively, yet much of their reason for being lies beyond their walls, in the practitioners they work with and the audiences and publics they serve.
We apply the idea of breaking the fourth wall in three ways: helping professionals across organisations and disciplines exchange ideas and learn from peers facing the same questions; supporting organisations in deepening and widening their relationships with audiences and communities; and exploring the role of cultural organisations in civic and public life.

What makes The Fourth Wall different?
The Fourth Wall is designed for the whole cultural sector, from museums and galleries to festivals and arts centres, with speakers whose experience spans institutional leadership and the day-to-day realities of cultural practice. Programmes will be shaped by input from the sector, so they respond to the questions and challenges organisations are facing.
At the centre of each programme will be an extended breakout session: small groups, cameras and microphones on, working through the programme's key questions with peers from other institutions, guided by an experienced facilitator. Keynotes and panels with leading practitioners sit alongside in-depth case studies of the strategies behind real institutional work: what was tried, what succeeded and what proved difficult.
Alongside its webinars, The Fourth Wall will offer organisations tailored consultancy from specialists with experience across the sector and, in the longer term, in-person events at partner venues in cities around the world.
